Upcycled Jar Lantern | A Firefly Jar For Grown-Ups
These upcycled jar lanterns began the way many of our projects do - with a shelf of glass jars that felt too lovely to toss. Instead of sending them to the recycling bin, we cleaned, painted, and dressed them up until they looked ready for a twilight picnic.
Each lantern starts as a rescued jar, then gains layers of color, translucent washes, or pressed patterning that let the candlelight breathe through. We add simple wire or twine handles to many of them, so you can hang your lantern from a hook or branch, or carry it out to the porch on summer nights.
Drop in a tealight or small LED and watch how the glass throws soft patterns onto nearby walls. On a table, a cluster of jars looks like captured fireflies. In a window, a single lantern becomes a gentle beacon for late evenings and early mornings.
What you gain with these lanterns:
- An easy way to bring atmosphere to patios, altars, and reading nooks,
- A safer, contained vessel for candlelight,
- A piece of decor that keeps existing glass in use instead of in a landfill.
Because every jar begins life as something else - a sauce jar, a thrifted find, an orphaned mason - sizes and shapes vary. We lean into that variety, creating one-of-a-kind finishes on each piece. Some are more rustic with frosted paint and jute, others carry a hint of enchantment with metallic flecks or stenciled moons.
They fit naturally into homes that prefer character over perfection, and they are especially kind to renters who need changeable, non-permanent ways to shift a room's mood with just a strike of a match.
